A colour ramp built from between two and eight colours you choose yourself, mapped onto the picture's brightness.
Where palette() generates its ramps from waves, nothing is generated here. You supply the colours and, if you want, the positions along the ramp where each one sits, and the effect blends between them.
That makes this the tool for reproducing a specific palette rather than exploring one. The stop positions matter more than they first appear: spaced evenly, each colour gets an equal share of the tonal range, but moving one compresses the band on one side and stretches the other. That is how you make a gradient that holds a particular colour across most of the midtones and passes quickly through the rest.
The format comes from Tetra, another Noise Factor tool, which is where the name originates.
